Two William Schmidt “double” covers in a row! Or perhaps not, as today’s exhibit is not really a double image at all. For some reason, there is only one picture, and not very interesting at that, forcing me to veer off on a discourse about cruise ships.

These days, almost every cruise ship is laid up, costing its owners a fortune in carrying and maintenance costs. Consequently, they are being sold off, often for scrap. My wife is gleeful, having regarded them as veritable viral buffets for many years, not just during the Current Unpleasantness.

For a few seconds I thought Mr. Schmidt might have used SS Mariposa, the ship JDM sailed on in Nothing Can Go Wrong, as a model for this cover, but his ship has its funnel too far back and doesn’t have the cargo handling davits.

Have you seen me? I am the 29th through 31st printings of Darker Than Amber, printed in 1955 by Fawcett under its Gold Medal imprint (ISBN-10 0449127524). I am a lot like today’s cover but my price is only $2.95.
