Reader Hugh Pickens provided a link to a nicely written review of this nicely written story, commenting that he had never seen two of the cover images shown in the review. I’ve posted a link to the review before, but it’s worth doing again. This is one of Hugh’s never-seen covers, yet another great Robert Hale cover. While many later Hale covers were drawn, or at least designed, by Barbara Walton, these earlier covers are done by an unknown hand. They tend to lurid colors and classic pulb cover style, so this one is a bit unusual in being more symbolic imagery. The girl has to be Betty, of course, but the falling man (do you think the artist just watched Vertigo?) could be Hugh Darren’s symbolic fall from grace (in which case, who is the watching man?) or might be a much more literal depiction of Benny’s last scene in The Empty Trap, if you constantly confuse the plot of these two books like I do.

And Hugh, here‘s the other cover you’ve never seen.
