I just finished re-reading this one after many years. Well, not this 7th printing, but one just like it that I’ve already posted. The story is yet another character study of a bunch of people who happen to come together, à la The Damned or Murder in the Wind but not as well done as either.

Now that the story is refreshed, I realize that the flying man is Devin Jamison. I guess the girl is Kathryn Aller. The vaguely Hispanic man must be Frazier. You know how I hate to complain, but the truck is depicted crashing into the cars but it was a plot point that the driver sacrificed his life to avoid hitting anyone.

There are three interesting (to me) geographical oddities in the story. One, as Steve Scott has already mentioned, Lou mentions that she was born near Sharon, Pennsylvania, where MacDonald was born. Two, Devlin states that he was ticketed for speeding in Colonial Heights, Virginia, “a notorious speed trap.” I drive through Colonial Heights regularly and am always careful with my speed even though it’s been fifty years since the story was written. Third, Frazier is on the lam (he’s a baad little boy!) for robbing a bank in Williston, Florida and stealing a car in nearby Chiefland. I lived near both of those towns and go back to North Central Florida regularly. It’s fun to see a place you know mentioned in a book.
