I love this superb Danish cover. For one thing, the unknown artist has chosen to illustrate a scene from the book other than Sam’s seduction of Jane, which is the apparently required choice for everyone else. This cover depicts Laura and Fletcher being interrupted by the “beefy, square-skulled man” who owns the red barn that features in the story.

The second thing I like is the high quality of the painting. The impressionistic style is far more satisfying than a more realistic approach would be. Her post-coital empty-eyed expression is truly haunting, and the beefy man is really intimidating. This is good stuff.

In the interest of accuracy, I should mention that this title reflects the unofficial temperature in Minidoka. The official temperature was only 103 degrees Fahrenheit.

Have you seen me? I am a Danish edition of The Dreadful Lemon Sky, titled Elsket og myrdet (Loved and Murdered), printed in 1974by Lademann.
