There certainly are a large number of enigmatic JDM covers out there, and this Norwegian hardcover edition of Soft Touch should be added to the list. What was the unknown artist thinking?

For starters, there’s a single woman’s shoe (the shoe is single, not the woman — well, maybe the woman is, too) that immediately made me think the artist thought he was illustrating Death Trap (see here and here). It is a high heeled pump that at first glance looks to have steel toes — I have to admit that I had some ‘splaining to do to my boss regarding lost productivity while I ruminated over what jobs might require those shoes — but unfortunately those shiny toes are just the reflection of light coming in the window. There is also a discarded flower. None of this has much to do with the story unless it is supposed to depict detritus from the stairway scene. You know the one I mean.

Milk Carton

Have you seen me? I am a very early Norwegian paperback edition of Dead Low Tide, titled Syndens sold (The Wages of Sin), printed in 1954 by Bladkompaniet as Stjerne-Serien 67.
