Compare this cover with this one which was printed about five years earlier. Pretty much the same McGinnis artwork, but they’ve dropped the fat author font and returned to a serif font for JDM and the title. MacDonald’s name now appears at the top, much more appropriate to a big time author. Somebody decided that the original artwork was too dark (I agree) and so they have lightened the upper half. And of course, we are now plugging a different book on the cover. Fortunately, they decided to keep McGinnis’ iconic cloud and sunset.

Snarky comments aside, I think this is an improvement.

I agree. Although… still not great, is it?

No, it’s not. This artwork appears to be intermediate in style between McGinnis’ “realistic” stage and his later “montage” stage where he seemed to be going for a Gothic style. His later montages were much more compact and busy and didn’t spread out to the edge of the cover.
