A lot of people know this cover. It has an interesting collage effect, as if they cut out the picture and pasted it on the cover. I have always thought this “you don’t really belong here” idea mirrors the teenagers’ sense of isolation from society. All right, enough amateur psychology.

The composition is interesting, too. Out of the four hands pictured, three have thumbs stuck in pockets, a sign of rebellion if I ever saw one, and the fourth rests proprietarily on the girl’s arm, with its thumb stuck out in case it needs to hurriedly get into a pocket.

I have always liked the portrayal of the girl here because the artist didn’t overdo it; she looks like someone I might actually know, wearing clothes that I might actually wear. She even looks the right age. She does have a mighty arrogant stance, in contrast to his deliberately nonchalant one.
