Class, let’s compare and contrast this cover with a Deceivers cover we looked at sometime back. Both are early 1970s McGinnis efforts (well, I’m pretty sure both are, although I can’t prove it for The Deceivers). Both have a man and a woman standing in the foreground. Both have the background airbrushed out (or perhaps McGinnis never drew it). Both men are holding something long and thin in their hands. Just sayin’. Both books promote themselves as being about people who are being Very Naughty Indeed.

Now the two covers go in divergent directions. Deceivers tries to be clever. The fact that the couple is having an affair is portrayed indirectly by the motel in the background, and the police car proves that the affair is illegal, but the overall effect is that nothing is happening, let alone something wicked. Details grabs you by the lapels and shakes you roughly. “Yeah, I’m painting a naked girl. What are you going to do about it?” She’s lying on a psychedelic blanket, so you know there’s drugs involved. The other woman, the one with the sprayed-on pants, except no paint ever clung that closely, is a classic McGinnis slattern. I’m not even sure if she’s topless or not; if so, her hair wraps around her breast in a very odd way, and if not, then her halter fits very badly or was designed with Brogdingnagian peekaboo picture windows. Either way, you don’t need no motel to know that she’s a Bad Girl and is almost certainly testing the tensile strength of the Ten Commandments in a way involving multiple violations of the Hays Code.

What, you’re not going to be mean about the unattributed promotional teaser/quote? A technique guaranteed to make me scowl and even on occasion to tut loudly.

I would hate to be responsible for causing others to hush your loud tuts.
