I don’t know why I am so surprised by how many John D MacDonald books have been translated into Swedish, but I am. Perhaps it’s because of my Swedish friend (hi, Göran!), but he couldn’t care less about JDM, so maybe not. Anyway, apparently MacDonald was so popular in Sweden that his massive novel output wasn’t enough, so Wahlströms answered the demand by reprinting a short story in a volume by itself.

This is a Swedish translation of “The Second Chance”, which appeared in Bluebook magazine in March of 1953. I haven’t read it, so I hope Steve Scott gets moving and writes one of his excellent reviews, but I’ll take a wild guess and say that it is one of JDM’s sports stories. Boxing, perhaps? I like the way the unknown artist has captured the horror on the girl’s face as a roundhouse right coming from out of frame is about to finish the fight.

This book is one of those oddities where the author is credited as “J.D. MacDonald”.

Spela för högt was one of at least six JDM shorter works that appeared in book form in other countries. Most were novellas, but I don’t recall “The Second Chance” as being that long. Great find! I’ve never seen that cover.
