This is one of the few Sandy covers that did not choose to illustrate the bone-chilling beach scene from the story. Instead, the artist (Robert McGinnis? Looks like him to me) illustrates a simple, almost pastoral  beach scene, where Travis McGee with serious curvature of the spine (“Sit up straight, son, or you’ll be hunched over when you grow up!”) sips a Plymouth Punch and stalks lanky bikini-clad girls from behind a tree. Actually, I think the scene is moments before Travis tosses the girl’s dim but muscled boyfriend around like my dog did to my slipper (fleece-lined, thank you very much) in a well-written parody of the 98 pound weakling story (44.55 kg for my vast international audience).

My feet are cold.

Update (09/26/2013): The 9th and 10th printings came out in 1974 and 1975.

And old! Or an old Kiwi. I can’t believe I once played rugby in the under-5 stone division.
