This is the Swedish version of “On the Run” and is illustrated by the prolific Swedish artist Bertil Hegland, whose career ended abruptly in 1967 when his hand was caught under a battery, rendering him unable to draw. He died in 2002.

Hegland did some pretty good covers for crime and children’s books (interesting combination), but this isn’t one of them. I’m no artist, but even I can tell the perspective is wrong. Her hair is crudely drawn. The gap between her fingers is too large. The man’s hands look childish.

The title comes from a Swedish proverb, “Bättre fly än illa fäkta”, literally “Better to flee than fight poorly”, or figuratively “Discretion is the better part of valor”.

Update (04/082102): Many thanks to Uilke for a much nicer scan, which you now see.

Have you seen me? I am the Swedish version of Nightmre in Pink, titled Farlig vinst (Dangerous Prize), printed by Wahlströms as Komet 142.
