I never can remember the plot of this story from the title. Then I read a synopsis and think “oh, that one”. Not bad. It’s yet another Florida story where people’s lives are slowly being ground into hamburger by evil or uncaring persons. I like the review that says “John D. MacDonald likes to punish his main characters”.

The cover of this first edition is really arresting. I have no idea if Milton Charles read the book or if the cover is supposed to represent any particular character or scene but yikes! As Peter & Gordon sang, “all the guys who dig strip-tease, praying for a little breeze”.

Have you seen me? I am the British hardcover version of Slam the Big Door, printed in 1961 by Robert Hale.
