0031 The Only Girl in the Game
This the the first edition of The Only Girl in the Game, one of the best stories ole Johnny Mac ever wrote. I first read it as a teenager and when I re-read it for the fourth or fifth time a few months ago, the ending still grabbed me as it did the first time, even thoug I knew what was coming. There’s a very nice review of the book here.
I don’t know who the cover artist is and it’s probably just as well since I’m not crazy about the cover. The girl is far too sophisticated, haughty, and chubby to be Betty Dawson. The well-known McGinnis cover captures her much better, and is just better art to boot.
Edit: (8/30/2011): Really? This is Barye Phillips? Well, everybody has an off day once in a while. What I have learned from this is that I wish I had Shine’s book. By all accounts he is HMFWIC of cover artist identification. Thanks, Steve.

According to Walter Shine this cover was illustrated by Barye Phillips.
